As a result of the unfortunate outbreak of coronavirus, the demand of hand sanitizer has drastically increased. These days it is usual for stores to run out of stock with hand sanitizers and there is always a chance to buy a low quality or fake sanitizer. For your utmost safety from the deadly virus, you must be carrying an Instant hand sanitizer in your pocket wherever you go. You also must understand that soaps and commercial hand sanitizers are standard and the most cautious alternatives to fight germs. However, the sure way to be ready for situations where you might go short on those products is by storing backhand, home-made protective equipment.
DIY hand sanitizers being one such example. They are easy to prepare but will do the job only to some extent. Make sure to use this Instant hand sanitizer only when there is no commercial hand sanitizer in sight. Here we provide you a step by step guide to preparing a sanitizer at home with ingredients that are easily available in city stores. Let’s begin.
1. Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) with a concentration of at least 90% which may go up till 100%
2. Aloe vera gel
3. Essential oil for odour purposes(optional)
Make sure to carefully use the ingredients in the adequate amount. If the ratio is disbalanced during the procedure then it may result in a less effective solution.
Step 1 – Bring an empty bottle or any air tight container of the size of your palm.
Step 2 – Sanitize it properly.
Step 3 – Fill 1/3 of the container with aloe vera gel and rest 2/3 of the container with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl).
Step 4 – Close the container and whisk the solution for 2 minutes to ensure both the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Step 5 – To counteract the strong odour of alcohol, you may add 3-5 drops of essential oil. (This step is optional)
Step 6 – Close the air tight container and store it for future use. Make sure to not expose it in air for a long time as alcohol tends to evaporate and your sanitizer will soon be over.
Things To Remember:
1. Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) has the highest proportion of alcohol and is most effective in killing the coronavirus. Do not settle for any other form of alcohol as it will be least effective.
2. An airtight container should be used for storing this Instant hand sanitizer as the alcohol here will be less likely to evaporate.
3. Do not pour in more than 5 drops of essential oil as it will make the solution more dilute and hence, less effective.
How To Use?
Take 2-4 pumps of Instant hand sanitizer and rub it across your hands for 20 seconds. Do not touch any surface for the next 10 seconds.
How Effective Will It Be?
Using a hand sanitizer is not the ultimate solution to fight the deadly virus. However, it can reduce your risk to catch the virus to some extent. You should always keep in mind other factors like social distancing, wear a mask, not touching your face, etc, to be on the safer side. Do not rely on this instant hand sanitizer for protection against coronavirus. Instead, follow the guidelines issued by WHO and be responsible for your own safety. If you are experiencing symptoms, please seek help as soon as possible.
A commercial hand sanitizer is prepared under the supervision of experts who make sure to look for its quality. It undergoes various tests to ensure an adequate ratio of ingredients. A home-made Instant hand sanitizer will not be 100% effective due to obvious reasons. However, prevention is better than cure. To prevent yourself from the coronavirus, you must always be prepared with the necessary equipment. A hand sanitizer with a concentration of 60% alcohol should be in your pocket all the time. Make yourself an Instant hand sanitizer at home beforehand with the above-mentioned steps. Stay safe!
